In October 2020, our area experienced a devastating wildfire that burned nearly 200,000 acres and destroyed more than 360 homes. In a small community like ours, the impact was deeply personal—nearly every builder in Grand County lost at least one home they had constructed.
Greg was no exception. Two of the homes he had built were completely lost in the fire. One of those homes had an outbuilding constructed using ICF (Insulated Concrete Form) methods, with a stucco exterior, metal roofing, soffits, and trim. As the fire approached the property, it melted the gas regulator, releasing 1,000 gallons of propane that ignited. Despite this, the outbuilding remained structurally sound and largely unaffected by the flames.
One door near the gas regulator was blown inward, and one window was damaged. However, the contents inside the building were mostly untouched and only slightly affected by smoke. To repair the exterior damage, Greg and the homeowner decided to replace the original stucco with corrugated metal siding.
The interior required extensive cleaning—many hours of scrubbing, multiple coats of sealer, and fresh paint—to fully remove the smoke damage. This building was part of a rebuild project for the same homeowner who had originally entrusted Greg to build their home long-distance. Their continued trust speaks to the quality and integrity of Greg’s work, even in the face of disaster.
